Local Dialogue in the Local Library - Backround story

THE BACKGROUND STORY AND FIRST YEAR OF THE LOCAL DIALOGUE IN THE LOCAL LIBRARY PROGRAMME

The pilot project unfolded in three stages. To date, two groups have successfully completed the dialogue training designed specifically for library staff. Moreover, the pilot training programme has evolved into a comprehensive dialogue skills development programme, now targeting local government leaders.

BRAINSTORMING SESSION, 1. MARCH 2022

The project was officially launched on 1 March 2022, with brainstorming sessions conducted at the Tartu City Library. The sessions brought together library representatives, civil society enthusiasts, democracy advocates, and community development experts to explore the potential of libraries in society.

TRAINING PROGRAMME, MARCH TO SEPTEMBER 2022

A tailored training programme was developed for library staff, comprising five sessions held between March and September 2022. The programme aimed to enhance the capacity of libraries to act as facilitators of dialogue and produce guidance materials for community engagement targeted specifically at librarians. The methodological content of the training was developed by Piret Jeedas, a seasoned engagement practitioner, dialogue expert, and lecturer in andragogy. DIALOGUE WEEK, 6-10 JUNE 2022

The collaborative Dialogue Week for libraries participating in the pilot project took place in June 2022. See the impact report to learn about the topics discussed and the insights gained across different regions of Estonia.

Building upon feedback from the 12 librarians who completed the pilot programme, we produced an impact report and a free e-manual on how to foster dialogue.

The Estonian Cooperation Assembly conducted the project Local Dialogue in the Local Library in collaboration with the 2022 Year of Libraries initiative and the Estonian Librarians’ Association.
